The «Différent» (Different)
is the distinctive punch mark which guarantees
you Monnaie de Paris’ quality, origin
and authenticity of its collector coins,
medals or jewelry. An 1832 ordinance prescribes
that all medals bear the “Different” mark
of La Monnaie’s Director. Until 1879,
this punch was the personal mark of the
institution’s director. In January
1, 1880, a « Different », which
represents a corn of abundance, was adopted
across directorships. A second “Different” appears
on coins: the General Engraver Master’s
mark. These two identification marks are
in-sculpted in all the manufacturing tools
for circulating and collector coins. They
constitute the State’s guarantee
in respect of metal alloys, the fineness
of their metal content (density) and the
conformity of coins with their original
model. A new “Different” appears
on all tooling instruments created after
July 1, 2003: the mark of Hubert Larivière,
manager of Monnaie de Paris’ engraving
workshop. It represents a French horn,
a few waves and a fish’s silhouette.
The author drew his inspiration for this
design from his first name for the French
horn (which evocates St. Hubert, the Patron
Saint of the Hunt) from his last name (“Larivière” meaning “the
river”) for the waves and, finally,
from his zodiac sign (Pisces) for the fish’s
silhouette.
