Manufacturing Medals at la Monnaie
Since centuries, our medal workshop manufactures art medals. The medal workshop relies on techniques and processes which combine traditional craftsmanship and high technology. The hydraulic screw press stamps observes and reverses of matrix pairs of coins or dies on metal coins (“rondelle ou flan”) – to check - . This process is repeated various times for the metal to reflux at the bottom of the matrixes and for all medal’s details to reveal their relief. Between two strikes, the metal hardens and is oven-baked again to gain back its malleability. Despite the mechanization of these techniques, the manufacture remains one of an outstanding artisan craftsmanship. The more pronounced the relief of a medal, the greater the number of successive strikes needed. A few medals are struck and oven-baked two or three times whereas other need to undergo this process seven and more times to reveal their final relief. Browse our Selection of Medals

Manufacturing Art Castings and Bronzes at la Monnaie
The Foundry creates actual sculptures. Thanks to the unique process of air-free cast moldings (“moulage sous vide avec plan de joint”), this workshop can produce 50 cm (< add .???? inches) high sculptures. Thanks to its traditional process, the Foundry can as well produce sculptures of smaller size or with richer relief and fine gold jewelry collection lines.
